Most people say that preparedness is next to godliness (or cleanliness if you like). We tend to agree, to prepare is to be smart and responsible. You prepare for a whole range of things in life that really matter very little, from catching the bus on time to making your lunch, surely there is room to prepare to preserve the things that really make your life special and unique.
If you know something is going to happen, what do you do?
Most of us would prepare for it by planning, practicing and getting the necessary things we need to get the job done. If you know you have an exam coming up, you prepare for your exam. You practice questions and gather together your pens and paper. If you know that you are playing an important game on the weekend, you grab a few extra minutes on the courts or field. You practice your shots. You gather your uniform and equipment. To prepare is to make yourself ready to be successful at the things you do.
But life isn't always predictable. Sometimes you have to prepare for things that may, or may not, ever happen. For example, we all carry a spare tyre in our car, on the off chance that one day we mat get a flat. The spare tyre in our boot costs us money to buy, and we may never need to use it, but if we didn't prepare for the chance that we might use it, we all know that it is a long walk home down the highway.
At Chilli Preppers we like to prepare for whatever comes our way, so that when it does we will not only survive but thrive.
How do we start preparing?
Well Chilli Preppers would suggest that to prepare you need to start with a plan, this will allow you to map out what you need, should an emergency arrive. We also have contingency plans, for when something happens that isn’t on the initial plan, and you need to adapt quickly.
We suggest that your first step is to have an Emergency Evacuation Plan (EEP) so that if the poo hits the fan and you need to get out of there, you have a plan on how you are going to do it. Your EEP should have a map or image of the place you are evacuating showing all exits, a safe muster or meeting point and a safe route that you will allow you to safely evacuate from the area. This sounds ridiculous when life is peachy, but when the storm front or fire wall hits, the world is already chaotic. The last thing you need is to be searching on Google maps while smoke fills the air or debri flies around your head.
The Oxford dictionary defines prepare in a couple of different ways:
“Make (someone) ready or able to do or deal with something”
The more someone’s you can have on your team that are ready and able the better.
“Make (something) ready for use or consideration”
There is no point having something in your kit if it is not ready for use.
“(be prepared to do something) Be willing to do something”
Sometimes this may mean doing something that you would not normally do or don’t want or like to do.
What are the most important things for survival?
Well they always say the same old 3 things: Food, Water, and Shelter.
Chilli Preppers would like to add Love as an important thing for survival as there isn’t much point surviving if there is no one to share it with.
CHILLI Prepping is our approach to preparing to survive in a disaster.
